Wei Yan
By Family Tree series, one can sense that Wei Yan is purifying his art language. Eastern flavor, flexible color and wired imagination are unique characteristics in Wei Yan’s art works. What his recent works differ from the former ones lies in his giving up the narrative representation as well as ancient legends and traditional imagination.
When depicting “Lotus” the specific symbol, Wei yan began to trace out two possibilities: one is the logic of painting language itself; the other is purer combination of independent spirit and painting language. The former emphasizes the relation between form structure and art structure, which is, thinking of the connection between Chinese ink paintings and western abstract art; the latter struggles to defense various temptations and perceiving pure and rich beauty of imagination.
